Preaching Outline: Romans 2:12-16

By Law, Conscience, or Christ All Will Be Judged

Text: Romans 2:12-16 Theme: Every person—whether Jew or Gentile—is accountable to God, either through the Law or through conscience, and will be judged by Christ.

Introduction (5-7 minutes)

  • Illustration: A courtroom scene—everyone understands the idea of judgment, where a judge evaluates evidence and gives a verdict.

  • Context of Romans 2:

    • Paul is addressing the self-righteous Jews who assumed they were safe because they had the Law.

    • He makes it clear that God's judgment is based on obedience, not mere possession of the Law.

    • Gentiles, though without the Mosaic Law, also have a standard of judgment—conscience.

  • Main Idea: God’s judgment is impartial, just, and based on the knowledge given to each person.

I. Judged by the Law (Romans 2:12-13) (10 minutes)

A. The Standard of Judgment (v. 12)

  • Two groups:

    1. Those who have the Law (Jews) – They will be judged by the Law.

    2. Those without the Law (Gentiles) – They will be judged apart from the Law.

  • Principle: Judgment is based on the revelation given.

  • Application:

    • Knowing the Bible does not exempt you from judgment—it increases your accountability.

    • Example: Many attend church, hear sermons, and read Scripture, yet do not obey.

    • Disobeying Conscience is Dangerous

B. Righteousness is a Do Thing, Not a Hearing or Feeling Thing (v. 13)

  • Key Verse: "For it is not the hearers of the Law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the Law who will be justified."

  • Connection to James 1:22: "Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves."

  • Illustration: A student who listens to lectures but never does homework—he will fail the class.

  • Application:

    • Are we merely hearing the Word or obeying it?

    • Many people believe they are saved because they have Bible knowledge, but true faith results in obedience.

II. Judged by Your Conscience (Romans 2:14-15) (10 minutes)

A. The Moral Law Written on the Heart (v. 14)

  • Gentiles who do not have the Law still do things required by the Law.

  • How? God has written a moral code in every human heart.

  • Example: Even in cultures without the Bible, people know that stealing, lying, and murder are wrong.

  • Biblical Support: Romans 1:19-20 – God has revealed Himself through creation.

  • Application:

    • People often ask, “What about those who never hear the Gospel?”

    • God holds them accountable to the truth they do have—through conscience and natural revelation.

B. The Witness of Conscience (v. 15)

  • Definition of Conscience: The inner voice that distinguishes right from wrong.

  • The Role of Conscience:

    • Accuses when we do wrong.

    • Defends when we do right.

  • Illustration:

    • Have you ever done something and immediately felt guilty? That’s your conscience bearing witness.

  • Application:

    • We should not ignore or sear our conscience (1 Tim. 4:2).

    • The conscience alone cannot save—it must be informed by God's Word.

III. God's Judgment Through Christ (Romans 2:16) (10 minutes)

A. Judgment Will Happen on a Fixed Day

  • Paul states that there will be a future day of judgment.

  • Ecclesiastes 12:14: "For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil."

  • Illustration: A surprise audit—things done in secret will be revealed.

B. Judgment Will Be Through Jesus Christ

  • John 5:22: "The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son."

  • Acts 17:31: "He has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed..."

  • Jesus is the Judge—He sees beyond actions to motives.

  • Illustration: A courtroom where the judge already knows everything about the defendant—no lawyer or argument can change the facts.

  • Application:

    • Are you prepared to stand before Christ?

    • The Gospel Paul preached is not only about salvation but also about accountability.

Conclusion: Are You Prepared for Judgement Day? (5-7 minutes)

  • Summarize Key Points:

    1. God judges based on knowledge given (Law or conscience).

    2. It is not enough to hear the truth—we must obey.

    3. Jesus Christ will judge all, even the hidden things.

  • Gospel Invitation:

    • No one can meet God’s standard perfectly.

    • The only hope is the righteousness of Christ (Romans 3:21-22).

    • Call to repentance and faith in Christ for salvation.

  • Final Challenge:

    • Are you relying on religion, knowledge, or outward morality?

    • Have you truly repented and placed your faith in Jesus?

Closing Prayer: Ask God to convict hearts, awaken consciences, and lead people to Christ.
